How to Draw a Puppy
Many animals are very difficult to draw freehand, but the puppy is a relatively easy animal design. The style of art used in this article is especially great for cartoons, because the puppy looks so comical. Use the illustration on this page to help guide your drawing as you follow these steps. In no time at all, you'll be drawing your own adorable puppy.
Steps
- Start by drawing a circle. This will be the head.
- Overlap the circle you just drew with another circle below it. The second circle is the torso, and should be larger.
- Connect the two circles and draw a straight line under them. This serves as the ground. You can add grass and flowers if you like.
- Draw a nose on the first circle. It can look like a "U" shape. Add a symbol that looks a bit like a two pronged fish hook under the nose. This forms the mouth.
- Sketch in two semi circles for the eyes. Then draw a small circle within each of the semi circles to make the pupils.
- Draw two ears on each side of the first circle. They can be short and pointed, or long and floppy.
- Use a "U" shape to create the the puppy's tongue.
- Draw two circles on each side of the torso. These are the paws. Add little lines to create the toenails.
- Add two more semi circles at the bottom of the second circle. These are the back legs, which are folded up under the pup.
- Add the tail. Be creative and let it be whatever shape or size you want.
- Finish the drawing by adding detail. This can include such features as stripes and white spots. You can also color the puppy any color that you want. Remember - he is your special puppy drawing.
- Enjoy your drawing!
Tips
- For colors: brown, goldish/brown, orange, and yellow look good with the puppy, although any color will do.
- For best results, outline the main parts of the dog with a marker or pen and erase excess pencil lines.
- Always sketch. This means to draw lightly, so you can barely see what you're doing. If you have to erase for any reason, it will be easier to erase if your lines are light.
- It is best to test out your colors in a separate sheet of paper before actually adding them to your drawing.
